Local competitors vied for a guaranteed audition in front of American Idol producers when the Fox network singing competition reality show comes to Houston later this month.

They came, they saw, they even sang a little. Thousands arrived for the opening of American Idol registration at Heinz Field, hoping to secure an early spot when the hit Fox reality show begins auditions Friday morning. They began trickling in late Tuesday night, carrying towels, camp chairs and blankets, bottled water and energy bars.
